The Owls beat East Carolina 18-17.

The remarkable finish sets up a winner-goes-bowling showdown next weekend at Rice Stadium with former Southwest Conference rival SMU, which rallied to upset Tulsa in Dallas. Both the Owls (6-5, 5-2) and Mustangs (6-5, 4-3) are bowl eligible, but a seventh victory would almost guarantee a bowl bid for the winner.

Rice's last bowl appearance was the 1961 Bluebonnet Bowl.
