End of the road?

"I may never play again," he said. "It's been 15 years with the Astros. I have to do what's best for me, what's best for the Astros and best for baseball."
Well, it looks like the inevitable may have happened. Jeff Bagwell, the Astros' all-time leader in homeruns (449) and RBIs (1,529) may have to hang up his cleats for good. His ailing shoulder just doesn't want to cooperate, and today it was announced that he will go on the disabled list and won't start the season with the team. So his streak of opening days as the Astros' first baseman will come to an end at 15 when Lance Berman takes over this year. While Jeff still speaks hopefully of a comeback later this season, his manager and Astros officials do not.

Seeing Bagwell end his career makes me sad. I've been a fan since his rookie season, my first year at Rice. Wednesdays in April and September were student nights. We'd all pile into Gil's little Toyota pickup (freshmen in the truck bed, upperclassmen up front, ha!) and head over to the Astrodome, where we would complain about the price of AstroBeer and yell our lungs out. (It was only about a mile, so the freshmen weren't in too much danger.) The loudest cheers were always for Bagwell and Biggio, who would fifteen years later be the active leaders in pro sports teammate tenure.

We'll miss you Jeff.

Yes, exactly.

He should have hung his steroid-using cleats up earlier... if he retires, it will be the first thing good he's done for the team in 5 years!

I never thought this day would come, but I am going to refer to some freakin' stats . . .

2002 - hits: 166. HR: 31. RBI: 98.
2003 - hits: 168. HR: 39. RBI: 100.
2004 - hits: 152. HR: 27. RBI: 89.

See for yourself.

Is that what you mean by not helping the team the last 5 years?!

And if you have evidence of steroid use, please present references. Rumors don't fly on the PhlipSide.
